Madrid, Spain – An American expatriate, Maddy, known online as 'Maddy | Life in Spain,' recently shared her insights into the unique charm of Spanish culture, drawing comparisons with life in the United States. Having resided in Spain for five years, Maddy highlighted five key aspects that have captivated her, offering a fresh perspective on the country's lifestyle. Among her observations, Maddy noted the distinct social atmosphere in Spanish bars and restaurants, where conversation takes precedence over screens. "In the United States, it's very common to enter a bar and suddenly there are 20 televisions showing all kinds of sports," she explained in her video. "Here, people are talking, not using their phones." This emphasis on direct interaction extends to public spaces, as Maddy pointed out the constant presence of people on the streets, day or night, enjoying the outdoors, chatting, and spending time with family and friends. Another cherished aspect for Maddy is the Spanish approach to food. She praised the focus on seasonal ingredients, noting, "I can only find Brussels sprouts now until about March, because it's the season." This contrasts with the American market, where, she says, "you can find whatever you want, whenever you want." Maddy also celebrated the tradition of extended family meals, particularly on Saturdays, where generations gather to eat and engage in 'sobremesa' – the cherished time spent lingering at the table after a meal to talk and enjoy each other's company. Finally, she lauded the simplicity and quality of Spanish cuisine, emphasizing that the most important factor is the quality of the ingredients, rather than elaborate sauces or frying.
