Hungary's PM Orbán Explains Hurdles in Replacing Russian Oil with Croatian Imports

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has addressed the nation's oil supply strategy, explaining why Croatia cannot fully replace Russian crude oil imports. Speaking on a social media platform, Orbán detailed the logistical and economic challenges associated with diversifying Hungary's energy sources. "The Croatian Prime Minister attacked us at the council meeting," Orbán stated, referring to a recent political exchange. He elaborated that Hungary receives two vital products, gas and oil, and currently, the focus is on oil. While the Friendship pipeline brings Russian oil, Hungary also requires alternative routes due to its landlocked status. Orbán highlighted that Croatia possesses a pipeline that could transport non-Russian oil from a seaport. However, he emphasized a crucial limitation: "The capacity of the Croatian pipeline, according to all our knowledge, is far from sufficient to satisfy the oil demand of the two countries." He noted that while it could provide an additional 2-3 million tons, Hungary's total requirement is 14 million tons. Furthermore, the Prime Minister pointed out the significant cost disparity. He explained that the price of Russian oil delivered via pipeline is cheaper than oil transported by sea tankers to Croatia and then onward. He added, "The transport fee for the oil pipeline running from Trieste, an Italian port, to Vienna, is a quarter of what the Croatians ask from us to bring it up from Croatia." Orbán concluded that while Hungary appreciates Croatia's help for supplementary supply, it cannot replace Russian oil entirely.
