Polish Election Recounts Ordered Amidst Dispute Over Narrow Presidential Victory
Warsaw, Poland – Following a tightly contested second round of the Polish presidential election, the Supreme Court has mandated recounts in 13 electoral districts, including the city of Krakow, citing irregularities and counting errors. The decision comes amidst a heated political debate regarding the validity of the results. Conservative candidate Karol Nawrocki emerged victorious, securing just over 51% of the votes, a narrow margin of approximately 2% over his opponent, Rafał Trzaskowski, who garnered nearly 49%. The election's aftermath saw prominent political figures engage in public discourse. Former Prime Minister Donald Tusk took to X (formerly Twitter) to question the transparency and real results of the vote, directly addressing current President Andrzej Duda and Karol Nawrocki. In response, President Duda suggested that the government party and its supporters were struggling to accept defeat, indicating a deep division within the political landscape. Despite the ongoing recounts, the Supreme Court is expected to make a final decision next week. Karol Nawrocki is slated to be inaugurated as the new head of state by August 6th, as previously announced. The number of votes under review is not considered significant enough to alter the overall election outcome.
