New research suggests a simple household ingredient could significantly reduce pesticide residues on fruits and vegetables. A recent video by certified nutrition coach Romain | Manger pour demain demonstrates a 'grandma's trick' utilizing baking soda to clean produce, including both conventional and organic items. The method involves soaking fruits and vegetables in a solution of one tablespoon of baking soda per liter of water for a minimum of 15 minutes. Following the soak, the produce should be thoroughly rinsed under clear water and then dried. The video highlights that while this technique can greatly reduce pesticide residues, it may not eliminate them entirely. According to Romain, pesticides can cause harm to human health, particularly by altering gut microbiota. He references a study titled "Effectiveness of Commercial and Homemade Washing Agents in Removing Pesticide Residues on and in Apples" published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry in 2017, which supports the efficacy of baking soda in reducing surface pesticide residues.
