Cybersecurity expert María Aperador has issued a critical warning to Movistar customers regarding a sophisticated scam involving router changes. According to Aperador, fraudsters are impersonating Movistar representatives, contacting customers with an offer to 'upgrade' their current router to a new 5G-compatible device. The scam operates by tricking individuals into believing they are speaking with legitimate Movistar personnel. During these calls, scammers may attempt to extract personal and confidential information, including addresses and payment details, or even try to switch the customer's service provider without their true consent. Aperador emphasizes that Movistar will not typically call customers to arrange unsolicited router changes or demand payments over the phone for such upgrades. She strongly advises against providing any confidential information or making payments to unverified callers. To confirm the legitimacy of any such communication, customers should independently contact Movistar's official customer service number, rather than relying on numbers provided by the suspicious caller. This proactive step can help prevent falling victim to these fraudulent schemes and safeguard personal data.
