A recent viral video featuring dental student Nikola Maricic has shed light on critical, yet often overlooked, aspects of oral hygiene. Maricic explains that brushing teeth immediately after certain activities can be detrimental to enamel health. "Many people instinctively reach for their toothbrush after vomiting or eating, believing they are cleaning their teeth," states Maricic in the video. "However, this can actually spread harmful acids across the tooth surface, accelerating enamel erosion." The video emphasizes that stomach acids present after vomiting, and acids from food and drinks, create a highly acidic environment in the mouth. Brushing during this period can mechanically abrade the softened enamel. Dental experts recommend waiting at least 30 minutes after such events, allowing saliva to naturally neutralize the acids and remineralize the enamel, before proceeding with brushing. This advice aims to prevent long-term damage and promote healthier dental practices.
