La experta habla de los riesgos de no proteger la vista de los más pequeños
A pediatrician, Mar López, recently highlighted the critical importance of children wearing sunglasses to safeguard their ocular health from ultraviolet (UV) radiation. According to López, the transparent nature of a child's eye lens in their early years allows for greater penetration of UV rays, significantly increasing the risk of developing conditions such as cataracts, keratitis, and even certain cancers later in life. The Spanish Association of Pediatrics recommends that children begin using sunglasses as early as possible, ideally from six months of age, or sooner if they are exposed to direct sunlight. When selecting sunglasses for children, López advises parents to ensure they offer 100% UV protection, indicated by labels like 'UV 400' or '400 NM,' and carry the CE mark, signifying compliance with European standards. Furthermore, she recommends choosing lightweight, flexible, non-metallic frames that provide adequate coverage for the child's face and eyes. She also noted that visors and hats can filter up to 50% of UV rays, offering additional protection.
