Are You Missing Out on Thousands in Free Childcare Money?
Millions of UK parents are missing out on free childcare money. The UK government offers financial assistance to help families with childcare costs, but many eligible parents remain unaware of this support. According to Martin Lewis, founder of MoneySavingExpert.com, hundreds of thousands of families could be entitled to up to £2,000 per year. "There are 800,000 parents who are eligible missing out on the hideously misnamed Tax-Free Childcare," Lewis explains in a recent video. The scheme, which Lewis suggests renaming "Working Families Childcare Top-up," provides financial assistance to working parents. Eligibility depends on income and the number of working hours. One parent, Owen, shared his experience, stating, "We only discovered 'tax-free childcare' in October 2023, two years after our son started nursery. By then, we'd paid £11,361 in fees, and had we known about TFC, the government would have contributed £2,272." The government also offers additional support for children aged 4-16, including free school meals and enriching activities. Lewis urges parents to check their eligibility on the gov.uk website. This vital financial assistance can make a significant difference for many families struggling with childcare costs.
