Turn IKEA Billy Bookcases Into Stunning Built-In Vinyl Record Storage - House D…
By joining two IKEA Billy bookcases with decorative strip molding, you can create oversized faux built-in storage for your vinyl records.
A popular home interiors content creator, known as Melanie Lissack Interiors, has recently shared a comprehensive tutorial on transforming the ubiquitous IKEA Billy bookcase into a custom-built, high-end furniture piece. The DIY project, which the creator undertook seven years ago, has proven to be a long-lasting and effective storage solution for her home, costing less than 300 at the time of its original completion. The tutorial details a method involving two tall Billy bookcases, which are separated by a wide pine plank to create a larger unit. A custom box is then constructed and affixed to the top of the combined bookcases, extending their height and giving them a more integrated appearance. To conceal the original join lines and the adjustable shelf holes characteristic of IKEA furniture, strip molding and half-dowel beading were meticulously applied across the entire structure. The back panels of the bookcases were enhanced with beadboard wallpaper, which was subsequently primed and painted to achieve a textured, finished look. This hack effectively elevates the standard flat-pack furniture into a bespoke-looking home library or display unit, offering significant storage and a personalized aesthetic.
