Travel Alert: Former Hotel Manager Exposes Two Widespread Hotel Scams

A viral online video, featuring former hotel manager Melissa, has recently brought critical attention to two widespread hotel scams that travelers across the globe should be acutely aware of. Melissa, known for her practical travel advice, meticulously detailed these deceptive practices, drawing from her extensive experience in the hospitality industry where she personally witnessed these incidents affect unsuspecting guests. The first scam she elucidated involves an unsolicited phone call directed to a guest's room, where the caller falsely identifies as a member of the front desk staff. This imposter typically claims that a payment issue has arisen with the guest's reservation and urgently requests credit card details for immediate verification. "Hotel staff will not call you to verify a card number over the phone," Melissa firmly stated, advising all guests to immediately disconnect such calls and report them to the actual front desk. The second insidious scam she highlighted involves the placement of fake restaurant menus discreetly slipped under hotel room doors. These fraudulent menus often feature enticing culinary options and a phone number for ordering. Unsuspecting guests who proceed to call this number to place an order are then prompted to provide their credit card information to the scammers, who subsequently fail to deliver any food, as they operate outside of legitimate restaurant services. "People are actually scamming guests by having them call the phone number, placing a food order, getting their credit card information, and never delivering the food because they're not at a restaurant," she explained, emphasizing the predatory nature of these schemes. Melissa urged all travelers to exercise heightened caution, recommending that guests always inquire at the hotel's legitimate front desk for verified local restaurant menus or utilize their personal mobile devices to research and select trusted food delivery applications, thereby safeguarding their financial information and ensuring a secure travel experience.
