When Joe Rogan cited a Washington Post article on his podcast to suggest that Earth might actually be cooling, TikTokers were quick to fact-check him.
A meteorologist has publicly addressed and refuted claims made by podcast host Joe Rogan regarding Earth's climate. Rogan, during an interview with Senator Bernie Sanders, suggested that the planet has been experiencing a "cooling period." The meteorologist, identified as @meteorologistchris on TikTok, presented scientific data to counter this assertion, emphasizing the critical role of human activity in recent climate trends. The meteorologist referred to a September 2024 article from The Washington Post, which provided a historical overview of Earth's climate spanning 485 million years. While acknowledging that Earth's temperature has never been static, experiencing ice ages and heat waves, he highlighted that the planet is currently in what is known as the Holocene interglacial period, where temperatures would naturally be cooling. However, the meteorologist pointed out a significant deviation from this natural cooling trend. "Temperature should be cooling, and they have been cooling up until the last 150 years," he stated. He then presented a graph illustrating temperature and CO2 levels over the last 1,000 years, demonstrating a sharp increase in both during the industrial era. "All of the warming that we've been seeing over the last 150 years is directly tied to carbon dioxide emissions through the burning of fossil fuels," he asserted. He further explained that proxy data, derived from sources like tree rings, ocean sediment, and ice cores, is crucial for understanding Earth's ancient atmospheric conditions, as thermometers have not existed for most of Earth's history. The meteorologist concluded by stressing that the current rate of warming has not been observed within the 300,000 years of human existence on the planet.
