Today, Zoe Cirrone, founder of My Moka Home, presents the moka pot as a love letter to Italian coffee culture.
In a recent viral video, 2022 US Barista Champion Morgan Eckroth has shed light on the art of Moka pot coffee brewing, a method often misunderstood by home enthusiasts. Eckroth, known for her accessible coffee education, explained that "Moka pot coffee is a unique category, distinct from both pour-over and traditional espresso, despite its pressure-brewing technique." The Italian-designed Moka pot, invented in the early 1930s, utilizes steam pressure to force hot water through ground coffee, producing a concentrated brew. Eckroth guided viewers through the essential steps, advising to fill the bottom chamber with water up to the pressure valve and then adding medium-fine coffee grounds to the filter basket. She also suggested an optional Aeropress filter for a cleaner taste. A key tip from the champion involved managing the heat: "As brewing begins, turn down the heat and let it brew low and slow. Remove it at the first signs of sputtering to avoid over-extraction and bitterness." This advice aims to help users achieve the rich, heavy-bodied coffee that Moka pots are celebrated for. The video has resonated with a broad audience, sparking discussions among coffee lovers about brewing techniques and the nostalgic appeal of this classic method.
