Federal Court Strikes Down Trump's Tariffs: A Unanimous Decision
A New York federal court has dealt a major blow to a key part of President Donald Trump's economic policy by unanimously ruling that he exceeded his authority in imposing reciprocal tariffs. The decision, handed down by a three-judge panel that included a Trump appointee, declared the tariffs illegal. The judges stated that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, which Trump cited to justify the tariffs, does not grant the president unlimited authority to impose tariffs. "The court does not read [the law] to confer such unbounded authority," the ruling stated, adding that the tariffs were "set aside." MSNBC's Jen Psaki commented on the decision, noting the court's finding that Trump's justifications for the tariffs were "pretty thin."
