A recent incident in Zhejiang, China, has brought to light an unusual challenge in artificial intelligence. On June 18, a driver of a Xiaomi vehicle reported being repeatedly alerted by his car's AI system for apparent fatigue. The system, designed to monitor driver alertness, reportedly misidentified the man's naturally small eye shape as a sign of drowsiness. During a single journey, the driver received over 20 "Please focus on driving" warnings. Despite his efforts to actively widen his eyes and change his posture, the alerts persisted, causing frustration. A spokesperson for Xiaomi later confirmed that while the driver monitoring feature can be disabled, it is not recommended for safety reasons. This incident raises questions about the accuracy and potential biases in AI facial recognition systems, particularly concerning diverse human features, and underscores the ongoing need for refinement in autonomous driving technologies.
