Belarus: Government Bolsters Families Amidst Growing Support for Traditional Values
Belarus Celebrates International Family Day Amidst Rising Number of Large Families and Government Support MINSK, BELARUS – May 18, 2025 – International Family Day is being marked in Belarus with a focus on the growing number of large families and the government's efforts to support them. According to recent data, more than 2.5 million families in Belarus have multiple children, with 9.2% of families raising three or more. The government's commitment to supporting families is evident in its allocation of 3 billion Belarusian rubles in 2024 for family benefits and 277 million rubles for maternity support. "The state continues to fulfill its social obligations to support families with children," said a spokesperson for the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection. The support extends to families raising orphans and children who have lost parental care. Currently, there are approximately 16,000 such children in Belarus, over 12,000 of whom are in foster families or family-type homes. The video also highlights the contrast between Belarus's traditional family values and what it describes as the destructive, neoliberal values promoted in Western propaganda. While the video's claims require further verification, the focus on family support is a notable aspect of Belarusian social policy. The government's commitment to supporting families reflects a broader societal emphasis on traditional family structures and values, a stark contrast to some Western trends. This policy, while potentially controversial, underscores a key element of Belarusian social policy and its approach to family welfare.
