ICE Detains High School Junior, Sparking Student Protest
Milford High School students rallied outside their school on Monday to protest the detention of their classmate, Marcelo Gomes, by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. The 18-year-old junior was on his way to volleyball practice when ICE agents took him into custody. Federal officials confirmed the detainment during a press conference, explaining that the operation was actually targeting Gomes' father for traffic violations. "They took the wrong person," said one student, visibly upset. Gomes' lawyer, however, asserts that his client has no criminal record and has been living in the US legally since he was five years old on a student visa. The protest, which involved dozens of students holding signs and banners, underscores the community's concern and resolve to advocate for Gomes' release. The governor also expressed support for his immediate release from a facility in Burlington. The incident highlights the complexities of immigration enforcement and the impact on families and communities.
