Swimmer Dies in Lake Michigan Near Chicago Beach
A man died after being pulled from Lake Michigan near Chicago's 31st Street Beach on Monday afternoon. Firefighters responded to reports of a drowning. Divers recovered the man from the water, but he could not be revived. Dave Benjamin of the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project explained that cold water shock can quickly incapacitate swimmers. The man's identity has not yet been released. Drownings are more common this time of year because lifeguards are not on duty until Memorial Day weekend. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of water safety, especially during the early part of the swimming season.
