DFW's AAPI Heritage Month: Growth, Celebrations, and Sister City Bonds May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, and the Dallas-Fort Worth area is buzzing with activity. NBC 5 reporter Alanna Quillen recently emceed the third annual AAPI festival in Garland, Texas, highlighting the significant growth of the AAPI community in the region. According to Quillen, "DFW has seen the largest growth of Asian-American population than any U.S. metro area." This growth is evident in the vibrant celebrations taking place throughout the month. The video also spotlights the 35th anniversary of a unique sister city partnership between Fort Worth and Bandung, Indonesia. This connection, which began in 1990 when Indonesia purchased aircraft from Lockheed Martin, has fostered strong cultural exchange and community building. "It's the community they've created that's most important," says Onie Panjaitan, president of KMI DFW, reflecting on the enduring bonds between the two cities. The celebrations extend beyond Garland, with AAPI heritage festivals planned in Desoto and Dallas. The events offer a rich tapestry of cultural performances, food, and community engagement, showcasing the diversity and vibrancy of the AAPI community in North Texas.
