Union Leader Arrested During LA Immigration Protest: Two Sides of the Story
Los Angeles Union Leader Arrested Amid Immigration Protest Los Angeles, CA – June 10, 2025 – David Huerta, president of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) California, was arrested Friday, June 6th, and charged with a felony for allegedly obstructing federal agents during an immigration protest. The arrest occurred during ICE raids at a workplace in Los Angeles. According to U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli, federal agents were executing a lawful warrant when Huerta "deliberately obstructed their access by blocking their vehicle." Essayli stated, "Let me be clear: I don't care who you are—if you impede federal agents, you will be arrested and prosecuted." However, SEIU representatives contend Huerta was simply documenting the raid. A spokesperson for the union stated, "He is a leader that has devoted his life to advocating for migrant workers and was there defending the dignity and rights of these workers." Following his arrest, Huerta was briefly hospitalized for a head injury. He was later released on $50,000 bail. California senators have requested a review of the arrest. Huerta now faces up to six years in prison if convicted. The incident highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding immigration enforcement and labor rights in the United States.
