Apple to Pay $95M in Siri Eavesdropping Settlement
Apple to Pay $95 Million in Siri Eavesdropping Lawsuit Millions of Apple users may be entitled to compensation as part of a class-action settlement. The lawsuit alleged that Apple's virtual assistant, Siri, secretly recorded private conversations without users' knowledge. The settlement, announced in January 2025, involves allegations that Siri was surreptitiously activated to record conversations through iPhones and other Siri-enabled devices for over a decade. "Does Apple owe you money?" asks a video posted by NBC South Florida. The video explains that individuals who owned or purchased a Siri-enabled device between September 17, 2014, and December 31, 2024, and experienced unintended Siri activation during a private conversation, may be eligible to claim compensation. The settlement provides a $95 million fund for payments to class members. Claimants can receive up to $20 per device, with a maximum of five devices per claim. However, the final amount each person receives will depend on the number of claims filed. The deadline to file a claim is July 2, 2025. A judge will review the settlement on August 1st. If approved, payments will be distributed shortly thereafter. This settlement highlights the importance of privacy concerns surrounding voice assistants and the potential for unintended data collection.
