Wrong-Way Crash on Sawgrass Expressway Claims Life of Georgia Woman
Sunrise, FL - A wrong-way driver caused a fatal crash on the Sawgrass Expressway early Wednesday morning. A 38-year-old woman from Georgia driving a red Buick sedan was killed when her vehicle collided head-on with a Freightliner truck. The truck driver, a 47-year-old man from Hialeah, survived with minor injuries. Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) stated the woman was driving south in the northbound lanes near Oakland Park Boulevard. "She was going the wrong way," said an FHP spokesperson. Gary Catronio, whose daughter and her friend were killed in a similar wrong-way crash on the same expressway in 2013, commented, "I'd hate to have people go through what we went through and still going through. It's a daily ongoing thing. It never subsides." Catronio has been an advocate for improved safety measures on the expressway, including increased signage. This tragic incident highlights the ongoing need for increased awareness and proactive measures to prevent wrong-way driving accidents.
