New ICE Deportation Tactic Raises Concerns About Due Process
A new tactic employed by the Trump administration to accelerate deportations is causing concern among immigration attorneys and impacting the willingness of immigrants to participate in court proceedings. The strategy involves government lawyers dismissing cases in immigration court, after which ICE immediately arrests individuals outside the courthouse for deportation. "In 20 years, I've only ever had one client who was arrested outside of a courtroom," stated Ofilia Calderon, an immigration attorney. "This new tactic has a chilling effect; people don't show up to court because they fear immediate arrest and deportation." Video footage shows several such arrests in Virginia and Miami. A Department of Homeland Security official responded that ICE is "following the law and placing these illegal aliens in expedited removal as they always should have been." This new tactic raises concerns about due process and the potential for increased fear and avoidance of the legal system among immigrants.
