WMATA Bans Violent and Sexual Offenders from Metro System
WMATA's new policy to ban violent and sexual offenders from the Metro system has been met with mixed reactions. The policy, which went into effect recently, allows transit police to ban repeat offenders from the entire system—trains and buses—for up to a year. Previously, bans were limited to 24 hours. "Offenses that could get you banned include sex crimes, assaulting a Metro employee or customer, and violating the code of conduct," said a WMATA spokesperson. Enforcement will involve checking IDs at stations. Those caught violating the ban will face arrest for criminal trespassing. While WMATA hopes this will further reduce crime, already at a seven-year low, some riders question the practicality and potential for abuse of such a strict policy. The ability to appeal a ban is available, WMATA confirmed. The new policy reflects a growing concern about safety and security on public transportation systems across the country.
