Romanian Resident in Budapest Offers Candid Views on Trianon and National Identity

Budapest, Hungary – A recent interview conducted in Budapest has shed light on the complex historical and contemporary relationship between Hungarians and Romanians, offering a unique perspective from a Romanian man residing in the Hungarian capital. The interviewee, who was born in Moldova and grew up in an institution near Târgu Mureș (Marosvásárhely), moved to Hungary in 1997. Addressing the highly sensitive topic of the Treaty of Trianon, which significantly reduced Hungary's territory after World War I, the man described it as a "strict decision" that had "very serious consequences" for Hungary. However, he was quick to clarify that Romania had "nothing to do with Trianon," implying that the decision was made by other powers. He strongly criticized the tendency to cling to historical grievances, stating that it is "stupidity" and "primitivism" to remain fixated on the past. He urged both nations to move beyond these historical burdens and focus on the present and future. When asked about the differences between Hungarians and Romanians, he offered a candid comparison. He characterized Hungarians as a people who "like to complain a lot" and "like to point fingers," often blaming external factors like the government or even their spouses for personal issues. In contrast, he described Romanians as pragmatic individuals who "try to get out of every situation well" and "find a solution to every problem" through their own efforts. He also noted a shared trait: both Hungarians and Romanians "like to argue about anything." Reflecting on his personal journey, the man shared that before coming to Hungary, he "didn't know how to hate any nationality." He concluded by reiterating his belief that people should not be held captive by the past, emphasizing the importance of leaving historical burdens behind to progress into the future.
