Philippine Unemployment Soars: Millions Affected as Job Market Struggles
Philippine Unemployment Rises to 4.1% in April 2025 The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) recently released data revealing a concerning increase in unemployment. The unemployment rate climbed to 4.1% in April 2025, affecting over two million Filipinos. This marks a slight increase from the 4.3% recorded in January of the same year. "It's really hard, but we have to persevere," says Leah de la Torre, a job applicant featured in the News5 Frontline Tonight report. De la Torre has spent three months attending job fairs and applying for positions, illustrating the widespread struggle. The manufacturing sector, particularly the semiconductor industry, saw job losses due to weakening exports. The agricultural sector also experienced a decline in employment following a drop in rice prices. Many farmers are now seeking alternative employment opportunities. The report also highlights the challenges faced by underemployed Filipinos, those who have jobs but feel their income is insufficient. Dave Biong, a delivery rider, explains, "The expenses on gasoline and motorcycle payments are high. I need to provide for my family." The underemployment rate in April reached 14.6%. The PSA's Labor Force Survey, which informed this report, underscores the need for comprehensive strategies to address unemployment and underemployment in the Philippines.
