El comercio tradicional lucha por no desaparecer
Madrid, Spain – Small businesses across Spain are facing an unprecedented crisis, with over 50,000 local shops closing their doors between 2019 and 2024, according to a recent report by Noticias Cuatro. This alarming trend signals a silent farewell for traditional commerce, largely attributed to the burgeoning rise of online shopping. The report highlights that a staggering 20,808 businesses ceased operations in the first quarter of 2020 alone. The primary driver behind these closures is the significant shift in consumer behavior towards e-commerce. Currently, 57% of the Spanish population utilizes the internet for their purchases, and online sales have seen a remarkable 95% increase between 2019 and 2024. Amidst this challenging landscape, some traditional establishments are finding innovative ways to survive. One such example is a luggage shop in Bilbao, which has been in business for over 95 years. To counteract the impact of large online platforms, the shop has embraced digital strategies, complementing its physical sales with social media presence and a dedicated e-commerce website. This adaptation allows them to reach a wider audience and remain competitive, demonstrating a resilient spirit in the face of evolving market dynamics.
