Basque Country Residents Spend 300 Euros More on Groceries Annually Than National Average
Bilbao, Spain – A recent report by Noticias Cuatro reveals that residents of Euskadi, also known as the Basque Country, face the highest grocery costs in Spain, with households spending approximately 300 euros more annually to fill their fridges compared to the national average. The investigation highlights a significant economic burden on families in the region. According to the report, the average annual expenditure on basic groceries per person in Euskadi is around 2,000 euros. While the region does not show higher consumption rates in terms of food or drink compared to other Spanish autonomous communities, the prices for essential items remain elevated. "Here in Euskadi, we are the ones who spend the most on the shopping basket," stated reporter Alba Larreina from a local market in Bilbao. She added, "Specifically, about 2,000 euros annually per head." The report detailed specific consumption patterns, noting that Euskadi leads in bread consumption, with an average of 35 kilograms per person, significantly higher than the 24 kilograms consumed by residents in Aragon. Consumers interviewed at the market identified oil, fruit, vegetables, and meat as the categories where they experience the most substantial expenses. This data underscores a persistent challenge for household budgets in the Basque Country, as families grapple with elevated costs for fundamental necessities.
