Colombian Authorities Capture Key Dissident FARC Leader in Cauca Following Intelligence Operation A major breakthrough in the fight against armed groups in Colombia has occurred with the arrest of José Alejandro Guainas Mesa, alias Edwin, a prominent leader of the Dagoberto Ramos faction of the dissident FARC. The arrest took place in Cauca, Colombia. The operation was made possible by intelligence gathered from videos obtained by authorities. These videos, some of which were shown on Noticias Caracol, depicted celebrations and a funeral for a fallen commander, providing key information that led to Edwin’s capture. "This arrest is a significant blow to the Dagoberto Ramos structure," stated Héctor Harold Mera, the prosecutor on the case, in an interview. The videos showed Edwin's active participation in the group, including his presence at a funeral with other members in full uniform. The prosecutor highlighted Edwin's pride in his association with the group. According to the report, Edwin is accused of numerous attacks against the Colombian security forces in the Toribio area of Cauca. The videos also revealed evidence of underage girls being recruited into the group, further highlighting the severity of the group's actions. Despite not admitting guilt during his hearing, Edwin was sent to prison, thanks to the evidence presented by the DIJIN (National Police Directorate of Criminal Investigation). This successful operation demonstrates the effectiveness of intelligence gathering and its role in dismantling criminal organizations.
