Colombia's Ombudsman Calls for Violence-Free Election Pact After Senator's Attack

Following a recent attack on Colombian Senator Miguel Uribe, the nation's Human Rights Ombudsman, Iris Marín, has issued a call for a pact to ensure violence-free elections. In a live interview with Noticias Caracol, Marín stated, "The attack on Senator Miguel Uribe makes us reflect profoundly on the quality of our democracy." The proposed pact, supported by the UN, the OAS, and the Catholic Church, aims to establish nine key points of consensus, including a commitment to non-violence, respect for institutions, and the promotion of constructive language. Marín emphasized the importance of these measures, particularly in light of the escalating violence in regions like Cauca. She highlighted the need for a minimum and mutual respect for all participants in the electoral process, from candidates to citizens. The Ombudsman's office is prepared to monitor adherence to the pact, working with the MOE (Misión de Observación Electoral) to ensure a fair and peaceful election.
