Belgrade Students Protest Higher Education Law Changes
Belgrade University Students Protest New Higher Education Law Students from the University of Belgrade took to the streets today to protest a new law on higher education, expressing concerns about its impact on the future of education in Serbia. The protest, titled "Let's Defend Universities," drew a significant number of students who gathered in front of the government and General Staff buildings. The students' main concerns center around Regulation 5/35, which they believe negatively affects the calculation of professors' and teaching assistants' salaries. They also demand the disbanding of the working group responsible for the law's creation and an end to the commercialization and voucherization of higher education. One student, holding a sign that read "Students of Serbia, fight back!" stated, "We won't accept this new law; it undermines the quality of education and the future of our country." The protest reflects growing student activism in Serbia, highlighting the importance of student voices in shaping national policy. The government has yet to respond to the students' demands.
