Pepsi and Reclaim Partner to Tackle Plastic Waste in Uganda, Creating Jobs in the Process
Kampala, Uganda – A significant sustainability initiative is underway in Uganda, as Reclaim, a local recycling organization, teams up with Crown Beverages (Pepsi) to tackle plastic waste. The partnership, which began recently, has already yielded impressive results. "In the two weeks after the launch, we were able to collect over 21 tons, and sell 18 tons of that," said Junior Kwebiha Zerubabel, CEO of Reclaim. The program is not only cleaning up the environment but also creating jobs. Each collection point directly employs at least ten people, with hundreds more involved indirectly. The success in Hoima, where over 50 tons of plastic were collected last month, points to the potential for a wider impact as the program expands to Kampala and beyond. Zerubabel expressed excitement about the future, stating, "Once we have Hoima and Kampala set up, these two collection points are going to be giving us in excess of 100 tons a month." This public-private partnership serves as a model for addressing environmental challenges while fostering economic growth in Uganda.
