The Silence of Suffering: Mental Health Stigma in Uganda
Kampala, Uganda - May 30, 2025 - A recent discussion on 106.5 NRG Radio UG shed light on the pervasive stigma surrounding mental health in Uganda, particularly among men. The radio hosts spoke with a mental health expert who revealed that cultural expectations often pressure men to hide their emotional struggles, preventing them from seeking necessary help. "People fear seeking help due to fear of being called mad," the expert stated, emphasizing the widespread societal issue. The expert also highlighted the prevalence of depression and anxiety disorders, noting that many individuals don't even know about available mental health services. This reluctance to seek help is further compounded by the lack of accessible and affordable mental health resources in many parts of the country. The radio discussion serves as a crucial step in raising awareness and encouraging open conversations about mental health in Uganda, paving the way for improved access to care and reduced stigma.
