Life Sentence for Petty Theft in Kenya Sparks Debate
Life Sentence for Kenyan Man Who Stole 2000 Shillings Voi, Kenya – In a case that highlights the severity of theft in Kenya, Bernard Kimori has been sentenced to life imprisonment for stealing a relatively small amount of money. The incident occurred in September 2021 in Mgama village, Taita Taveta County, where Kimori stole 2000 shillings and two Nokia phones from a neighbor. Kimori appealed the initial verdict in Voi court, but the High Court upheld the life sentence on May 16th, 2025. Judge Asenath Ongeri stated that the prosecution presented sufficient evidence to support the conviction. "The evidence against Kimori was overwhelming," Judge Ongeri said. The case underscores the importance of respecting property rights and the consequences of theft, regardless of the amount stolen. The life sentence serves as a stark reminder of the potential penalties for criminal activity in Kenya.
