Kenyan Activist Deported from Tanzania After Alleged Torture
Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi's ordeal in Tanzania highlights concerns about human rights in East Africa. Mwangi, along with Ugandan lawyer Agatha Atuhaire, entered Tanzania on May 18th, 2025. Mwangi later posted on X, stating, "My life is in danger. I'm at Serena Hotel Dar es Salaam and there are armed men in civilian clothes outside my room." He was subsequently arrested and deported on May 22nd, appearing injured and unable to walk. His wife, Njeri, sought answers from the Tanzanian High Commission in Kenya. The incident has raised serious questions about the safety of human rights defenders in the region. "The government of Tanzania fails to account for his whereabouts." This lack of information and the alleged mistreatment has caused public outrage and demands for accountability.
