San Francisco, CA – The streets of San Francisco are increasingly becoming a testing ground for the future of urban transportation, with fully autonomous taxis from Waymo, a Google subsidiary, now a regular sight. A recent video review by tech content creator Numerama offered a detailed look into the passenger experience, highlighting both the marvel and initial apprehension associated with driverless rides. The creator documented his journey in a Waymo vehicle, emphasizing the complete absence of a human driver. "The steering wheel turns by itself! It's truly autonomous," he remarked, expressing his initial shock and a feeling of unease as the car navigated traffic independently. The vehicle demonstrated advanced capabilities, including accelerating, overtaking, and reacting proactively to complex urban scenarios, such as a child unexpectedly darting into the street and pedestrians crossing against a stop sign. Passengers interact with the car via interior screens, which display real-time LIDAR sensor data, showing the vehicle's perception of its surroundings, including traffic lights and other road users. These screens also offer control over features like temperature and music, and the option to request a stop for errands. Despite moments of concern, particularly when the car had to anticipate and brake for obstacles, Numerama concluded that the car handled situations "super well." The service allows passengers to sit in any seat, including the driver's, though touching the steering wheel is strictly prohibited. The experience concluded with the autonomous vehicle dropping off the passenger and continuing its route, empty, to its next destination. The video sparked discussions about the potential for such advanced driverless technology to be implemented in other countries, including France.
