"Creeping Out the Creeps" — Male Nurse Stands Up For Harassed Female Co-Worker
"Thank you for turning the tables on him."
An emergency room nurse, known as NurseMali, recently shared a compelling account of how he intervened when a male patient made his female colleague uncomfortable. The incident, which occurred during a Foley catheter insertion, saw the patient demand the female nurse smile, stating it was a "privilege" for her to perform the procedure. According to NurseMali, his coworker emerged from the patient's room looking visibly distressed. Upon learning of the patient's inappropriate remarks, NurseMali decided to take over the procedure. "Don't worry, if you can't smile, I definitely can," he recounted telling his colleague. Entering the room with a "big ass smile," NurseMali proceeded to insert the catheter while providing an excessively detailed and cheerful commentary on every step. He reportedly told the patient, "You are in great hands. Healing hands. The best hands," maintaining a wide smile throughout. The patient, initially seeking a smiling nurse, quickly became uncomfortable with NurseMali's approach. "He was so uncomfortable," NurseMali stated, describing the patient's reaction. The patient eventually requested the original female nurse return, complaining that NurseMali was "weird about the Foley." NurseMali concluded his story by emphasizing the importance of protecting colleagues from harassment, stating, "Don't come to the ER on some bullshit thinking you're gonna f*** with my coworkers, 'cause I'm gonna f*** with you too." The incident underscores the challenges healthcare professionals face and the creative ways they sometimes address inappropriate patient behavior.
