Ghana Health Service Acts to Curb Mpox Spread
Ghana Confirms Four Mpox Cases; Public Urged to Take Precautions Ghana's health service is working to contain the spread of mpox, with two additional cases confirmed today in Accra and the Western Region. This brings the total number of confirmed cases to four, according to an official press release from the Ghana Health Service. The release, issued on May 18th, 2025, emphasizes the importance of public health measures, including contact tracing, to prevent further spread of the virus. "Preliminary assessments indicate that these two newly confirmed cases have no epidemiological link to the earlier reported cases," the release stated. The Ghana Health Service is reminding the public that mpox is a viral disease transmitted through close contact with an infected person, animal, or contaminated materials. Common symptoms include rash, fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, low energy, and swollen lymph nodes. The public is strongly urged to practice regular hand hygiene, avoid close contact with individuals exhibiting symptoms, and report any suspected cases to the nearest health facility immediately. The government of Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public health and will continue to implement appropriate measures to manage the outbreak. The Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service are calling on all media houses to support public education efforts by using their platforms to raise awareness and provide accurate information on Mpox.
