Ghana Health Minister Pleads Against Immediate Implementation of New Nurses' Conditions of Service
Ghana's Health Minister Raises Concerns About Nurses' New Conditions of Service. Accra, Ghana – June 10, 2025 – In a recent address, Ghana's Health Minister, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, voiced serious concerns regarding the potential economic consequences of implementing new conditions of service for nurses. The minister stated, "New conditions of service for nurses will throw the economy off gear if implemented." He emphasized that the proposed changes were not factored into the 2025 national budget, and their immediate implementation would lead to significant economic strain. Minister Akandoh highlighted ongoing negotiations with the Ghana Registered Nurses Association (GRNA), Ministry of Finance, and Ministry of Health to develop a roadmap for the successful implementation of the new conditions of service. He appealed for public-spirited retired nurses and midwives to volunteer their services temporarily to mitigate the impact of potential disruptions. The minister's plea reflects the government's attempt to balance the needs of its healthcare workers with the country's overall economic stability. The Ministry of Health is expected to release a comprehensive list of healthcare facilities to assist patients during this period.
