Newly Discovered Spinosaurid Dinosaur Rewrites Prehistoric History
A new species of spinosaurid dinosaur, Protathlitis cinctorrensis, has been discovered in the Arcillas de Morella Formation in Castellón, Spain. The discovery, announced on May 18th, 2025, is significant because it represents the most basal form of the Baryonychinae subfamily. "This particular spinosaur is considered to be the most basal form of the subfamily Baryonychinae," explains Paleopedia, the video's creator. Interestingly, the holotype specimen was found back in 2011 but wasn't identified as a new species until recently. While much remains unknown about Protathlitis cinctorrensis's lifestyle, its classification as a spinosaurid suggests it likely lived near rivers and swamps, feeding on fish. The discovery also highlights the Iberian Peninsula's rich biodiversity during the Early Cretaceous period, as it was also home to another spinosaurid, Vallibonavenatrix cani. The coexistence of these two spinosaurids suggests the area provided a suitable environment for the diversification of large spinosaurids. This discovery underscores the ongoing work in paleontology and our expanding understanding of prehistoric life.
