New School in San Martín de Porres Cracks After Three Months: Parents Demand Virtual Classes
San Martín de Porres, Peru – The "Bicentenario" school in San Martín de Porres, inaugurated merely three months ago, is already showing significant structural damage, with cracks visible in its walls. This alarming situation has emerged following a recent 5.5 magnitude earthquake. Jorge Alejandro Sáenz, the school's director, expressed profound concern regarding the building's integrity. "All the walls are deteriorated and cracked," Sáenz stated, emphasizing the potential dangers, especially with the anticipation of stronger seismic events. He added, "Now we are concerned about a potential tsunami of magnitude 8." Parents, gravely worried about the safety of their children, are reportedly advocating for virtual classes until the structural issues are resolved. The director has formally requested inspections from various authorities, including the municipality, Civil Defense (INDECI), UGEL, and the Ministry of Education, to assess the damage and ensure student safety.
