
Magnitude 6.5 Earthquake Strikes Atacama, Chile: Minor Damage, No Fatalities Reported
A powerful earthquake of magnitude 6.5 struck the Atacama region in northern Chile on June 7th, 2025, causing minor damage and power outages but no serious injuries. The epicenter, located 63 kilometers west of Chañaral at a depth of 33 kilometers, resulted in the earthquake being felt in neighboring regions and countries. According to the National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (Senapred), the intensity reached level VII in Copiapó and Tierra Amarilla. "The damage is mostly minor," reported a Senapred spokesperson, "but we are still assessing the situation and providing assistance to those affected." Around 30,000 people experienced power outages. The video footage shows broken windows and damaged buildings, underscoring the impact of the quake. While the situation is serious, the lack of reported fatalities is a positive sign.
