Sheinbaum Celebrates Indigenous Jurist's Supreme Court Appointment
Mexico City – Claudia Sheinbaum, a prominent political figure in Mexico, recently lauded the selection of Hugo Aguilar as the next president of the Supreme Court of Justice. Aguilar, a Mixtec indigenous man from Oaxaca, secured the position following a vote by the INE. Sheinbaum, in a videotaped press conference, stated, “Me da mucho gusto que el próximo presidente de la SCJN sea un indígena mixteco,” expressing her delight at the decision. She further praised Aguilar, stating that he is "un hombre modesto, sencillo, pero no por eso con una enorme inteligencia y sensibilidad social." This statement highlights not only Sheinbaum's approval of the appointment but also her recognition of Aguilar's qualifications and character. The appointment is significant as it represents the selection of an indigenous individual to lead the nation's highest court, a milestone with symbolic importance. The INE's decision-making process and its adherence to constitutional guidelines also form a crucial part of this story. The appointment marks a step toward greater inclusivity within Mexico's judicial system.
