Sheinbaum Condemns Abarca Acquittal in Ayotzinapa Case
Mexico City President Claudia Sheinbaum voiced strong criticism of a judge's decision to acquit José Luis Abarca, the former mayor of Iguala, in connection with the disappearance of 43 Ayotzinapa students. Sheinbaum stated during a press conference, "No estoy de acuerdo con que los jueces, sin explicación alguna, absuelvan." This translates to, "I do not agree that the judges, without any explanation, acquit." She emphasized the existence of supporting evidence from the investigation, but also noted that Abarca remains in custody on other charges. The acquittal has sparked widespread controversy and renewed calls for judicial reform in Mexico. Sheinbaum's comments reflect the government's commitment to pursuing justice for the victims and their families.
