NEW YORK – Musician Hayley Williams recently opened up during an interview with The New York Times' Popcast, shedding light on the powerful social commentary woven into her latest solo album. Williams discussed the inspiration behind a provocative lyric from her song "Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party," stating, "I'll be the biggest star at this racist country singer’s bar." She elaborated on her commitment to addressing racial issues in the South, explaining that she feels compelled to speak out on such matters. "I'm never not ready to scream at the top of my lungs about racial issues," Williams stated, emphasizing the intersectional nature of these concerns, which she believes overlap with everything from climate change to LGBTQIA+ issues. She also referenced the historical song "Strange Fruit" in her track "True Believer" and spoke about the historically significant "Hard Bargain" neighborhood in Franklin, Tennessee, a site where a formerly enslaved man purchased land from his enslaver. Williams expressed immense pride in her ability to inject this vital history into her music, stating, "I said the thing that I feel and I said it in a way that is succinct and I'm proud of it."
