Fuel Prices Soar in Dominican Republic Amidst Global Oil Slump
Dominican Republic Presidential Hopeful Abel Martínez Accuses Government of Fuel Price Gouging Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic – Presidential candidate Abel Martínez has launched a scathing attack on the government, accusing it of allowing exorbitant fuel prices despite a global drop in oil costs. In a video posted to social media, Martínez highlighted the current price of gasoline at RD$290.10 (premium) and RD$272.50 (regular), a stark contrast to 2008 when, despite oil reaching US$147 per barrel, fuel prices were lower. "The petroleum is below 70 dollars…and here we continue paying for gasoline as if we were in a crisis!" Martínez exclaimed in his video. He further emphasized the lack of price relief even on Fridays, traditionally a day when prices were adjusted. "The big question is: Where does that money from the difference go?" he questioned. Martínez’s comments reflect widespread public discontent over fuel costs. The video has garnered significant attention, underscoring the urgency of addressing the issue. The government has yet to respond to Martínez’s accusations.
