Mastering the Autumn Harvest: A Comprehensive Guide to Storing Your Potato Crop

Potato Harvest Season: Expert Tips for Optimal Storage As the summer heat subsides and autumn approaches, gardeners across the region are turning their attention to the crucial task of potato harvesting. A recent online guide, shared by gardening enthusiast prnekuda, offers valuable insights into ensuring a successful yield and proper long-term storage. According to the guide, the ideal window for harvesting medium-late and late potato varieties for storage typically spans from mid-August to early September. This period is characterized by cooler temperatures and a reduced likelihood of heavy rains, which are crucial for preventing spoilage. "Potato tubers intended for storage must be dry," the guide emphasizes, warning that otherwise, "supplies can rot." To ascertain if potatoes are ready for harvest, the video advises observing the foliage. Once the potato tops begin to dry out and turn yellow, it signals that the tubers have absorbed all necessary nutrients from the leaves, formed a dense skin, and ceased their growth. Approximately 20 days after the foliage starts to dry, gardeners can begin harvesting. For a definitive check, the guide suggests digging up a few bushes with varying degrees of dryness. If the skin on all tubers is firm and the potatoes easily detach from the bush, it's time to commence the main harvest. Post-harvest care is equally vital. Potatoes should be spread in a single layer to dry for three to four hours in the open air. This drying period, ideally on a clear day, helps to further toughen the skin and remove excess moisture. Subsequently, potatoes should be sorted, separating small and large tubers, and discarding any damaged or slightly rotten ones. If multiple varieties are grown, it is recommended to store them separately. Finally, the guide stresses the importance of storing potatoes in a dark, dry, and cool environment, preferably in piles on the floor or in boxes. While some gardeners choose to wash potatoes before storage, the guide notes that this is a personal decision, as the time and effort required for washing and thorough drying may not appeal to everyone.
