A recent social media video by Rachel Andrew, a solo mother, has shed light on the challenging conditions often faced by new tenants in council housing. Andrew, who recently received keys to her new home in the UK, shared a "council house tour" detailing the extensive renovation work required before she can move in with her children. The video shows peeling wallpaper, bare floorboards, and a downstairs toilet she plans to remove to create a utility area. However, a significant concern highlighted by Andrew is a collapsing ceiling in the hallway, which has forced her to halt all renovation efforts. "This is probably one of my only complaints," Andrew stated in her video, pointing to the ceiling. "I've had to put a halt on everything I'm doing in here because... it's literally on the verge of falling down. One big door slam, that thing is going to fall." She added, "I can't have the children here, I can't do anything until that ceiling is sorted out." Commenters on the video echoed her frustrations, with one user stating, "If this was private rented they wouldn’t be able to rent it in this condition, council shouldn’t be able to get away with this." Another added, "Disgusting how the council are allowed to rent them out, that ceiling is so dangerous. The council are landlords & should make their homes habitual." The video has sparked a discussion about the standards of social housing provided to tenants, particularly for those in vulnerable situations.
