Raid your parents' (or grandparents') vinyl collection to make retro edging for a backyard flower bed. Just dig a trench and sink the records into it.
Vinyl Revival: Home Gardener Transforms Old Records into Unique Garden Edging A local gardening enthusiast, Rain Brock, has found an innovative way to repurpose old vinyl records, transforming them into distinctive garden edging. In a recent online video, Brock shared her step-by-step process and practical advice for this creative DIY project, which she describes as "definitely a labor of love." Brock's method involves burying the vinyl records roughly halfway into the soil, or at least below the spindle hole, to prevent warping. "If you don't bury them deep enough, they will warp within just a few days," she cautioned in her video. For those who encounter warped records, Brock offered a clever solution: "The good news is, if they do warp, you can flatten them out in the oven. Place on a baking sheet at 250°F for 3 to 5 minutes, then press flat while warm." To ensure the records stand straight and securely, Brock recommends packing dirt firmly around both sides and even stepping on the packed soil. She also suggested using sturdy supports like wood or metal pieces, revealing that she utilized parts from an old bed frame for her project. "Just make sure the records are packed in first, and then place the support behind," she advised. Brock also highlighted the versatility of broken record pieces, stating, "Save the broken pieces. They're perfect for filling in gaps around pipes, roots, and where an edge has cracked. You can also use them for art or another project." She concluded by acknowledging the "retro vibe" the vinyl edging provides, inviting viewers to consider trying the unique garden hack themselves.
