Philippines Seeks Interpol's Help to Arrest Harry Roque Amid Asylum Claim
The Philippines is actively exploring multiple avenues, including seeking Interpol's assistance, to bring former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque back to the country to face charges. This follows Roque's recent asylum application in the Netherlands, where he is invoking the international legal principle of non-refoulement. However, Malacañang has clarified that this principle isn't absolute and only applies to those facing persecution. Adding to the complexity, former Duterte legal counsel Salvador Panelo asserts that Roque is not facing persecution and should return to the Philippines to face the legal process. "He should come back and face the charges," Panelo stated, highlighting that the burden of proof lies with the government and that Roque is constitutionally presumed innocent. This ongoing situation underscores the intricate legal and political dynamics at play.
