Philippines Expands Affordable Rice Program to 120,000 Minimum Wage Earners
The Philippine government recently expanded its affordable rice program, extending its benefits to 120,000 minimum wage earners nationwide. This initiative, set to launch in June, offers rice at a subsidized price of 20 pesos per kilo. Arnel de Mesa, spokesperson for the Department of Agriculture (DA), confirmed that the initial list of beneficiaries was compiled by the Department of Labor and Employment. Each selected individual will be able to purchase up to 10 kilos of rice per month. However, de Mesa also noted that the distribution system is still under development. To facilitate the program's implementation, the government-run Food Terminal Incorporated has committed 500 million pesos to cover transportation costs. This expansion builds on an existing program designed to support vulnerable populations, including indigents and senior citizens, providing them access to affordable rice. The program's expansion is a significant step towards enhancing food security and supporting low-income families in the Philippines.
